Mission43 Entrepreneur Course Alum Competes in “The Greatest Baker” Competition Hosted by Buddy Valastro

Idaho Veteran entrepreneur could take the win!

U.S. Air Force Veteran, Dietrich Morgan, retired from active duty military in 2022 and currently serves as the Facilities Project Manager at the College of Western Idaho. Dietrich has always enjoyed baking, and started his businesses, The Cheesecakery Bakery LLC in 2012 while stationed in Italy.

I was trying different recipes and techniques while bringing them into work functions. I decided to start the business page when my group commander walked up and said ‘ya know...I would actually pay for this!’ I opened a business page that same day when I got home.

Since its inception, Dietrich has served delicious cheesecake across the world, making from-scratch, custom orders from Italy, to England, and now Idaho, where he and his family call home.

Dietrich is currently featured in the top 5 in his group of The Greatest Baker competition. The competition is hosted by Buddy Valastro, known as the Cake Boss, of Carlo’s Bake Shop. One lucky winner will win $10,000, a feature in Bake from Scratch magazine, and have a chance to meet Buddy V himself!

Support by VOting Daily!

The Greatest Baker competition features several rounds, requiring participants to place higher as they progress through. It’s a true People’s Choice competition - public voting will determine who will share their work in Bake from Scratch magazine, win $10,000 and meet Buddy Valastro.

You can vote for free once daily by using your Facebook account. You can also donate money for multiple votes; proceeds support the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, which provides financial assistance to families of children with cancer.

My biggest goals for my business include: Being well-known in the area, I’d like my cheesecake featured in establishments throughout the state, generate enough business and capital to fund my business without the need for a huge loan. Lastly, I would want my business to outlive me.

Support Dietrich and The Cheesecakery Bakery LLC by casting your vote daily using the button above. If you’re local to the Treasure Valley, visit the business Facebook page to put in your custom cheesecake order.

Group finals for The Greatest Baker competition run through January 4th, where group winners are combined in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. Finals begin January 26th, with votes being reset and the race to take the Grand Prize will last through February 1st!

Second Place $3,000: Zero Dark Thirty Coffee

Jarad Webb served in the Marine Corps for 4 years as a combat engineer and is passionate about giving back to the military community. Zero Dark Thirty Coffee came to fruition over a cup of coffee and a conversation about how to give back to brothers and sisters in arms. Zero Dark Thirty Coffee’s namesake came from military slang for “really early in the morning,” and is made from higher-quality roasted beans than most mass-produced coffee. Not only are you getting a better quality brew with each sip, but you’re also supporting the veteran community with Zero Dark Thirty’s mission to support service members and bring awareness to veteran and first responder suicide and PTSD.

The Screen It First Platform helps inform parents and educators about sensitive content in children’s books. In this platform, contributors can anonymously submit screens for books. Information is compiled and available for users to view as they wish, helping to identify sensitive content for others, or to view without having to read the book in its entirety.

We do not encourage book banning nor censoring, but instead aim to help the adults in a child’s life make informed decisions about which content is appropriate for their child.

Donald Young: Rattler Medical Solutions

Donald Young spent 11 years in the Army as a combat medic and currently serves in the Idaho National Guard as a medic and preventative health specialist. Rattler Medical Solutions aims to expand the capabilities for medical providers who are working in austere environments by giving them the right tool to preserve life. During his time as a combat medic, Donald saw a change starting of giving blood as close to the point of injury as possible. The current solutions to medics carrying blood in combat zones are either large and bulky but have a long storage capability; or, they are small and easily cartable but have a small storage area but also have a short lifespan. Using the smaller options require logistical support to resupply medics with cooling packs that can give away positions of troops in combat areas as well as put more assets in danger.

Rattler Medical Solution’s device, patent pending, is a battery powered device that can both keep blood cool, as well as warm it prior to administration. This will allow more medics to carry blood in combat zones there by expanding the capabilities for these medics to preserve life.

Jeffrey Bledsoe: Sewersleeve

Jeffrey Spent 38 years in the Air Force as a surgical technician and as a nurse in the Navy. His experience gave him a strong understanding about how to confine and contain biological waste. When he made an RV purchase, he immediately recognized the need to confine sewage waste from the sewer hose.

Jeffrey’s patented Sewersleeve is a plant-based, biodegradable sleeve that is inserted into the RV sewer hose and then slides out and is thrown away after use. The hose never touches sewage and doesn't need cleaning, no sewer smell to carry from site-to-site, and no sewage dripping on your possessions.

JJ Dela Rosa: Macadoo’s Lumpia Shack

JJ retired from the Air Force after serving 22 years as a radar technician. His passion for sharing his family’s recipes sparked the desire to open a food truck, Macadoo’s Lumpia Shack, which serves handcrafted Filipino eats like pancit, fried rice, pork skewers, and of course, lumpia! Macadoo’s can often be found at Meridian Main Street Market during food truck season, but they also cater. You can find out more by visiting their Facebook and Instagram.

Mission43 Entrepreneur Course alumni creates Boise’s newest sweet sensation: Whoopie-Ki-Yay

Mission43 Entrepreneur Course Alumni Launches Business

Boise’s newest sweet sensation: Whoopie-Ki-Yay

Vicki White is a retired Air Force SMSgt who has embarked on a delicious journey of entrepreneurship with her newly launched business, Whoopie-Ki-Yay, a one-of-a-kind bakery specializing in whoopie pies.

Vicki’s military journey began in 1983, right after high school, as a means to pay for her college education. She didn’t know then that a 31-year career in the Air Force and Idaho National Guard as a Senior Master Sergeant would equip her with a diverse skill set and prepare her to run her own business. With experience in admin, logistics, plans & scheduling, and as a First Sergeant, Vicki gained invaluable insights and training that she now applies to her own business.

All of those career fields gave me different insights and training that I could apply to my own business, and I did get that college degree with honors in Business Administration, but not until I turned 40.

Whoop Whoop for Whoopie Pies!

As a single parent, Vicki always had a side hustle to supplement her income, so she’s no stranger to entrepreneurship, but for years she had been trying to come up with the perfect business that would truly ignite her passion. The lightbulb went off when she stumbled upon the idea of a pumpkin whoopie pie, and recognized the untapped potential for this traditional East Coast treat in Boise’s culinary scene.

Vicki was accepted into the spring 2023 cohort of the Mission43 Entrepreneur Course, facilitated in partnership with the College of Western Idaho and taught by entrepreneurial expert Ryan Vasso of Reply Pro. Over the six weeks, she was able to build on her knowledge and connect with a group of peers sharing their insight and experience.

I was really nervous about taking the entrepreneur course. I wasn’t sure how intense it would be, but Ryan made it engaging and interesting! I was able to get an updated version of a business plan, versus what I learned in a 4-year degree. The course made it easy to actually put a working model together sooner.

The scary and exciting aspects of launching a business

Vicki’s entrepreneurial journey has seen its fair share of highs and lows. The highs are immensely rewarding, from making sales to receiving support from friends and family. However, the stress associated with setting up her first event was an initial challenge. Nevertheless, her determination and resilience have allowed her to learn and adapt with each event, making it easier over time. Vicki anticipates that it will be much more convenient once her food trailer is ready to hit the streets!

Launching a business is not for the faint of heart, and Vicki understands the apprehension that comes with it. Announcing her venture to the world and hoping for success was a nerve-wracking experience; yet, the most exciting part is hearing directly from customers and friends how much they love her whoopie pies. The sheer joy and satisfaction she witnesses with each order motivates her and fuels the growth of Whoopie-Ki-Yay.

How to get your hands on a Whoopie-Ki-Yay whoopie pie

Getting your hands on a fresh-baked Whoopie-Ki-Yay is easy as pie! You can place an order on Instagram and Facebook by sending a direct message, or you can reach out via email whoopiepiekiyay@gmail.com. Vicki is more than happy to take your orders and ensure you get your fill of goodies!

Headed out to any of the Idaho summer markets? You can catch Vicki and her whoopie pies at various upcoming events, like the Ontario Saturday Market and Middleton Harvest Festival. Whoopie-Ki-Yay pies are also located at Boise’s Hideout Coffee CO. on Broadway - and personally, we couldn’t think of a better combo than a whoopie pie and hot cup o’ joe!

The Whoopie-Ki-Yay food trailer is in the works and once completed, you’ll be seeing more treats at large venues and popular food truck spots.

Support local businesses, experience the joy of homemade goodness, and follow Whoopie-Ki-Yay on social media. Place your order(s) and be part of Vicki’s exciting journey as she spreads love and happiness one whoopie pie at a time.

3 Tips to Translate Military Experience on the PMP Exam Application

Translate your military experience into project management success

Project Management is a growing field in Idaho. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, management level occupations in Idaho are projected to increase 10.3% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all other occupations. Examples include Project Manager, Construction Manager, and IT Project Manager positions.

Military members and veterans possess many transferable skills, such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving, which are critical to project management success. These skills, combined with the training and experience gained from earning a PMP certification, make them ideal candidates for project management positions.

It can be intimidating to sit down and fill out the PMP exam application without knowing exactly how to summarize and translate military-specific project management skills into commonly recognized civilian terminology. We’ve taken some of the guess-work out of the process and outlined key tips to help you tackle the PMP exam application.

Tip 1: focus on your project experience

A project is something that you might perform in your job role, even without the formal title of “project manager,” that is not considered part of your normal day-to-day operations. The PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) Guide defines a project as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.

  • Projects are temporary: They have a definite start date and a definite end date - whether they meet those dates is another topic, but they are designed to be completed within a certain timeframe.

  • Projects create a unique product, service, or result: This is what sets a project apart from operations. Where operations would be considered the “norm-” what is necessary to perform daily to sustain an organization, projects achieve something outside of the daily grind. For example: Upgrading an existing radar system or establishing a forward operating base (FOB). Yes, this could be part of your duties, but it isn’t typically something performed on a daily basis with the same or similar goal/outcome.

Be sure to reference the PMP Exam Content Outline. This document provides a detailed breakdown of the topics covered on the exam and can help you identify areas where your military experience may apply.

Tip 2: translate Military jargon to Civilian language

One of the best ways to make sure your PMP exam application is accepted without revision requests from PMI is to avoid military acronyms, abbreviations, and using military “jargon.” Be sure to use the terms that are commonly used in the civilian workforce.

Check out this table of examples:

Tip 3: Use the 5 project management process groups

The current standard for PMP exam applications calls for using tasks associated with the 5 project management processes in your project description, which comes directly from the Project Management Body of Knowledge. For example:

  • Initiating: Describe how you secured project resources, identified project stakeholders, and established project governance.

  • Planning: Describe how you worked with your team to establish project objectives, define project scope, and develop project plans and schedules.

  • Monitoring and Controlling: Describe how you tracked project progress, monitored project risks, mentored the team, and adjusted project plans and schedules as needed.

  • Executing: Describe how you coordinated project activities, managed project resources, and executed project tasks and deliverables.

  • Closing: Describe how you finalized project deliverables, closed project contracts, and conducted retrospectives.

By providing specific examples of your experience in each of these areas using civilian project management terminology, military members can demonstrate their project management skills and experience to civilian employers in a clear and concise manner.

examples of PMI Accepted Military Projects

Below are some samples of real projects that have been accepted by PMI as approved project descriptions. You’ll notice that templates vary, but they all cover typical elements of a project, such as project title, role, description, budget, goal/deliverable, and outcome. However, we do recommend specifically labeling the tasks of each project process by beginning or ending your descriptor sentence(s) with (IN) for initiating, (PL) - planning, (MC) - monitoring and controlling, (EX) for project launch/execution, and (CL) - closing. This way, the PMI associate reviewing the application can clearly identify and understand your experience.

Some details have been changed/omitted for privacy or security reasons. Changes are indicated by (X).

Project Example 1

PROJECT TITLE: Airframe Model Upgrade Transition

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: This was a hybrid project with a budget of approximately $(X) and a deadline of (X) years to transition from a legacy (X) aircraft to a modernized (X) aircraft and train/qualify all unit members in the new design series.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: I served as the Project Manager and led a team of (X) for this project designed to transition to a newly fielded aircraft.

DESCRIPTION: I met with the higher-level chain of command (executive project sponsors) to develop the project charter and stakeholder register. Communicated with sponsors and stakeholders to identify necessary allocation of resources across project areas/phases. I also met with all internal unit members who acted as the customers for the project and gathered their high level requirements and set expectations (IN). Once the project was approved, I planned the project phases to be event-driven, based on resources, crew and equipment availability, and funding allocation. Detailed requirements were determined for the aircraft transfer and subsequent aircrew qualification courses, then added into a requirements traceability matrix. A detailed WBS was created to break out steps and processes for the actual aircraft transfer and design implementation of a training plan. Integrated procedures and communication plans into the project management plan to ensure adherence to governance rules and ensure that federal mandates and regulations were followed while utilizing OPA’s. I facilitated communication among the team, unit members, and our higher headquarters (executive sponsors) regarding the schedule to ensure they were informed of the project’s progress using Gantt charts, organizational charts, and other performance reports (EX).

DELIVERABLES: As key events happened (aircrew pre-position for quality control inspection, aircraft transfer, training and qualification courses), I confirmed the presence of MVP and the ability to move forward to the next phase (MC). After every completed phase, I facilitated after action reviews (retrospective sessions) to discuss and document what went right, what went wrong, and what needed to be improved before the next phase was entered (CL).  It was necessary to meet regularly with both stakeholders and sponsors to ensure that resources were available for completing/transitioning phases.

OUTCOME: Successfully accepted the transfer of a new fully functional (X) model aircraft with all associated equipment packages. Successfully executed a training and qualification program with a 100% qualification rate for unit members resulting in a Readiness Level rating of (X), translating to a unit posture of “deployable.” The project was completed on schedule and within budget with sponsor approval.

Project Example 2

Served as a Project Manager for Special Operations Command (X) to standardize interagency funding process for military liaison positions in U.S. embassies at (X). Held meetings with project sponsors to identify stakeholders and discuss preliminary issues with funding between the Department of State and Department of Defense. Created project plans to outline high level and detailed work packages and to create a scope and budget. Held weekly progress meetings with the project team and as needed with stakeholders to identify barriers and ensure delivery of tasks in approved plans. Wrote a standard operating procedure to clearly define all tasks required for interagency funding process and established mechanisms for controlling future requests. Closed project by transferring all deliverables from project lifecycle, ensuring closing documentation and SOP was signed off, approved and archived, and lessons learned were communicated to project stakeholders for future interagency projects.

Project Example 3

My organization implemented a new aircraft emergency procedure checklist and emergency procedures process. As project manager, my role was to rollout training for (X) aviators to ensure correct usage of the new checklists and procedures. The objective was to reduce aircraft accidents and fatalities by reducing the number of incorrect aircraft emergency procedures performed each year. I was responsible for aircraft checklist procurement and distribution; training facilities coordination and scheduling (classroom and simulator); training, evaluation, and certification of instructors; implementation of the emergency procedure process training and evaluation program; addressed issues; documented lessons learned; archived project documents. My key deliverable was the training and evaluation of all assigned aviators in the use of the new aircraft emergency procedures process. The outcome of the project was satisfactory and met all regulatory requirements.

Military Veteran and Entrepreneur Promotes Kindness with WeLoLo

Mission43 Entrepreneur Course Alum Launches App

Malcolm Brown was an Air Force crew chief on the KC-135 airframe. He loved serving his country and now that his military service is complete, he’s turning his focus to serving his local community. He recently launched WeLoLo (We Love Local), a mobile-application focused on creating a movement of kindness in Idaho communities. Malcom used the Mission43 Entrepreneur Course to test his business idea prior to launch, and grew his network by becoming a Mission43 Leaders Fellow. With WeLoLo in hand, he’s recruiting others to join him in his mission.

With the onset of COVID-19, Malcolm recognized the detrimental impact to small businesses and committed to creating a way to promote positive change and a sense of community through intentional acts of kindness.

“It was tough to watch the local businesses, especially coffee shops, cafés, and bars, either shut down completely or have to lay-off their entire staff. To me, that was a sign of things to come. Through life, I have seen how quickly the DNA of a neighborhood can change, not always for the better, when the mom & pop stores and other local businesses either go out of business or get replaced by large chains and big-box stores.”

Starting a business at any time can be daunting, especially in a time of economic uncertainty, but Malcolm believes in the power of doing good and has a strong support system to help see the WeLoLo concept take off. As more businesses join the platform, he sees it functioning like YELP, only without all of the negative reviews.

Generosity is a superpower, kindness is currency

You’ve heard the saying, “pay it forward”. Well, WeLoLo makes it easy to do just that! Users of the app can practice intentional acts of kindness in a just few easy steps:

  1. Choose a participating local business

  2. Select a participant from a list of supported community groups, OR enter a name and share from your phone’s contact list

  3. Choose your method of payment and submit!

If you’re looking to brighten a particular person’s day, they’ll receive a text or email notification to redeem funds, from $5-$100, at the chosen location. If you’d rather pay it forward to a stranger, you can choose from community groups like healthcare workers, first responders, educators, and military members/veterans.

Supporting Idaho’s small businesses

WeLoLo is building a movement around promoting locally-owned, small businesses and the customers they serve. You won’t see any large corporations on their partner listing. This ensures your generous gifts stay in, grow, and serve Idaho communities. Right now, you can gift a cup of coffee (or even add in a breakfast burrito) from Alchemist Coffee (@alchemistcoffeeroastingco) in Boise. Other local favorites that will be on the platform soon include:

Sending a WeLoLo from your favorite coffee shop to a friend or colleague can lead to discovery of new local businesses. WeLoLo is currently focused on food and beverage locations because they result in little friction when incorporated into the platform, but Malcolm hopes to expand options to include services like barber shops, nail salons, and outdoor recreational activities.

How can you partner or support?

Click here to get on the platform and send a WeLoLo to someone deserving of a surprise pick-me-up.

Education Discovery Series: Become a Teacher

How military community members can establish a career in education

The Mission43 Education Discovery Series highlights educational pathways to some of the most highly sought-after careers in Idaho for military members, veterans, and their spouses. Here we sit down with the experts on finding a path that is right for you to become a teacher in Idaho.

Whether you’re a transitioning military member continuing to answer the call to serve, a spouse interested in a transportable career, or you’re seeking a mid-career change, a career in teaching is worth exploring now more than ever. And there are flexible options in both education and employment paths.

Keith Donahue, Director of School Strategy and Operations with Bluum addresses the teacher shortage and outlines the differences in public, public charter, and private schools as teaching opportunities in Idaho.

Do a little bit of research to figure out what might be the right school. What pulls you when you look? Everyone will be very receptive, help you along the way, and be grateful for it.
— Keith Donahue

In Idaho, there are 116 public school districts, 66 public charter schools, 48 public magnet, 18 career technical, 124 private and parochial, 66 alternative, and 13 online and blended schools. While parent-focused, Bluum has put together an incredible resource that outlines school choices in Idaho. Not only does this help parents seeking the best school for their child, but it can be a guide for future teachers to find the right career path for their experience and goals.

Teaching pathways without a degree

The traditional path to becoming an educator is to complete an education-focused college degree program with the approved teacher preparation curriculum. However, there are alternative pathways that can have you in the classroom this school year.

Katie Rhodenbaugh, Evaluation and Research Program Assistant for the Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program at College of Southern Idaho assists professionals in their transition to teaching, whether starting with an unfinished degree or a degree in something else entirely.

Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program

The CSI Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program accelerates opportunities for paraprofessionals and career-changers to become certified teachers in Idaho.

“The goal of CSI’s teacher preparation program is to address Idaho’s current teacher shortage by ensuring more flexible and robust training options to support emergency hires throughout Idaho school districts, but also expanding our program to fulfill our vision of partnering with districts to proactively create and fill local teacher pipelines.”

Participants will go through 5 modules in two semesters + one summer session that covers classroom management, instructional content, professionalism, intellectual engagement and application of content, and successful learning by all students. This program is unlike any other in the state, where candidates receive individualized and consistent support through highly-skilled mentors as they progress through each module, which can be accessed online from anywhere in Idaho.

While they’re in our program, they’re serving as a teacher of record… you get to start working on the career ladder right away, making full teacher salary, and working towards your retirement from day one.
— Katie Rhodenbaugh

In order to be eligible, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and job offer (or be employed) at an Idaho district or school as a teacher, paraprofessional, or classroom aid. Members that are seeking employment in Region 4 that do not have a job offer or active role in the classroom can reach out to Katie to fill out a form that is shared with HR directors; it’s not uncommon for Directors to use this as a recruiting tool when certified applicants cannot be found.

Find out more about the Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program by visiting their FAQ page.

Career Technical Education, CTE

Do you have a professional technical skill? Career Technical Education teachers in Idaho are in high demand. These educators come with valuable industry experience to prepare Idaho’s youth for high-skill and in-demand careers.

CTE teachers are needed at a variety of schools, much like Elevate Academy, where industry meets education. Professionals with skills, experience, and/or certifications in healthcare, business, information technology, firefighting, criminal justice, and many other areas are currently needed.

If you have a special skill that you would like to bring to a classroom, click here to find out more about pathways to become a CTE teacher in Idaho.

Charter School Certification

Another non-traditional option in Idaho is through the Public Charter Teacher Certificate, which is a charter school-specific teaching certificate valid only for teaching at a public charter school. At a minimum, candidates must be over 18, have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and pass background check standards to be hired.

Often, charter schools have curricula that require a different set of standards than more traditional certification records. This certification option allows for public charter schools to hire quality talent and offer on-the-job training and mentorship to meet their specific teaching needs.

While it’s important to note that charter school-specific teaching certificates are not transferable to a traditional public school district, educated members of the military community that have a passion for teaching, are no strangers to accepting a challenge, adapting, and mastering new skills might find this path a natural fit.

If you’ve ever thought about teaching, this is the time to get started!

Joanne Collins, a military spouse that has recently transitioned to Idaho shares her story about what drove her passion for teaching and how she ended up making the decision to change her career path and teach elementary school full-time.

If there’s one message that we hope comes across from this session of the Education Discovery Series, it’s that

YOU CAN DO IT!
— Joanne Collins

If you feel the call to serve, but don’t know where to start, we’re here to assist. No matter where you are in your higher education journey, there is a program for you to get into the classroom. Idaho’s youth need leaders like you!
